Video Game Victory: Esports and Online Game Playing is Big Business Around the World
We already know how popular sport is around the world. From grassroots to professional leagues, small-town clubs to globally recognized franchises, top teams to world cup winners, sport is everywhere. It is also big business. It should come as no surprise, then, that since the emergence of esports, this popularity, devotion, and love for all things sports has seamlessly translated into the virtual arena.
Of course, iGaming itself has come a long way over the last few years. Ever since the early days of the Commodore 64, the Spectrum 48k, and the wide array of low graphics but high fun game consoles and devices that were brought to market, it was clear that computer games were going to grow and grow, becoming more sophisticated with every technological advancement in both software and hardware.
Today, esports has come a long way too. Far from being niche, esports is a global phenomenon, with esports events in 2024 surpassing previous achievements in both competitors and the number of events themselves. It is, of course, not the only digital entertainment success story in terms of game-playing.
Perhaps it is obvious, but the online casino sector has also come a long way, bringing with it previously niche games such as online bingo. This once less-known online pursuit, played in halls around the world and, let’s be honest, by the older generations, has become an online gaming sensation all of its own. As with casino games that were played in brick-and-mortar establishments, this game has taken a new digital format, and players are clearly loving it, with eyes down for a full house all around the world.
Indeed, we can take bingo as a staggering demonstration of how once lesser-played games are now worldwide entertainment favorites for the online game-playing community. Just one quick search, if you are not already familiar with these sites, apps, and platforms, will show you that online bingo options are almost innumerable. Even online bingo statistics show that the digital games are stacking up well against those who play at brick-and-mortar establishments, widening the audience for this particular gaming experience.
This used to be something of a niche pastime, and in the early digital days, it might have been played with inferior graphics and with a somewhat lacking overall experience. However, digital casinos rose to the challenge of making online games just as immersive as physical ones, and now, online bingo is very varied, with tons of different titles and takes to ensure the audiences can always find a game that suits them. Casinos as a whole are now a multi-billion dollar industry, played by billions around the world, on devices ranging from tablets to smartwatches, smartphones, and laptops, among other things.

From League of Legends to Fortnite, Player Power Is Growing the Esports Industry
When it comes to esports, the fan base is phenomenal. We are far from the days of lonely, solitary video game playing. Esports is now an industry worth billions, played by millions, and one that has a business model with a global reach.
Players can play against people from around the world, in real-time, around the clock, and they are expecting, perhaps even demanding, better versions of games with each new release. Player power is real. In addition to all this, of course, game players also have access to a wealth of game-related content for games from Counter-Strike to Minecraft, dedicated to delivering greater user experiences, all while helping players get better at their chosen game. Whether it’s tips for players or in-game tricks, players are not just powerful: they are a community that continues to grow, going from strength to strength.
With the growth in player numbers, tournament sizes, and corporate deals, the esports prize money is also becoming bigger and bigger for every new tournament. Such is the power of advertising, marketing, and sponsorship, and the draw of the growing number of professional esports star players.
This pot of cash continues to grow and attract worldwide attention and entrants as players become more numerous, more lauded, more rewarded, and more influential.
Money Matters, and Esports is a Global Money Making Machine
As with any form of digital, virtual, or online entertainment, the bottom line for video games, and in particular the esports arena, is how valuable the industry can become.
We have discussed how player numbers have grown, how global events have expanded, and how many players are now turning professional, but how does this translate into esports being a genuinely global business? If you take a look at some more figures, it becomes clear that this is a business behemoth that has almost limitless growth potential.
Esports is not just a form of online entertainment; it is a business operation that has febrile competition on a fiscal level, a development level, and a gaming level.
Part of the reason for this esports explosion is also based on the competition between coders, developers, and concept designers to create the next big thing in esports, a quest that is unlikely ever to end.
As with all digital advances, there is always something around the corner, always the next big game waiting to be released, or the long-anticipated next version of Fortnite, Mobile Legends, Counter-Strike, Valorant, or Minecraft, waiting to wow the eager players. As I posited at the start, I reiterate with ardour, esports is a big business around the world, and it is destined to get bigger still, and the fans can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
