10 New Magic Items for your D&D Games

The years die, burned to nothing by time, darkening my memory with their passion-like soot that builds upon a hearth beam. I am Mordenkainen, and although I do not look it, I am old. I have outlived rivals, enemies, and friends. I have lived long enough to see rivals become friends and friends become enemies-and to see enemies returned to the fold of friendship. But for a few dust-mad liches dreaming in their lonely tombs, my friends and I represent the last of the old guard. Who born in the last forty years can measure themselves an ounce of the worth of Otiluke, Bigby, Tenser, or Robilar-or even Rary or Evard?

Bah! What does it matter? I grow self-pitying as I approach the end of a century. Surely the young fools who test the wards upon my vaults are no younger or more foolish than my companions and I were when we delved into the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk or Maure Castle. They all have their reasons, just as we did long ago.

And what are those reasons? What draws adventurers today to plumb the death-trap depths of the earth and brave the terrors of curse-bound ruins? What called us to do the same in the past-and drives me still?

It all boils down to power: the wealth that can buy it and the magic that can wrest it from the ether.

-Mordenkainen, Magnificent Emporium-

The world of Dungeons & Dragons is filled with powerful wizards, dragons, and most importantly, treasure. One of the best parts of playing D&D is gathering lots of fun and powerful trinkets. Every adventure seeks a sword that can burst aflame with a word. A ring that lets them pass through crowded areas completely undetected and potions to heal their wounds. Below are 10 more fantastic magic items for your stories and campaigns.

arcane sharpshooter's ring | crit academy

Arcane Sharpshooter’s Ring

Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)

This ring was created by an accomplished wizard who was part of an adventuring party. He made it for his wife and traveling companion as well as the archer in the troop. She wore the ring as one might a wedding band. Eventually, though the party met a foe that it could not defeat, and the ring was lost among the loot.

The ring has 1d4 charges that recharge daily at dawn. While wearing this ring you can spend a charge and use a bonus action to speak the ring’s command word. The ring enchants the ammunition with magic. Your next ranged weapon attack made within 1 minute (as if concentrating on a spell) has its damage type changed to fire, cold, or lightning (your choice). Additionally, your ranged weapon attacks ignore half cover.

Maul of Displacement

Weapon (maul, warhammer, club), uncommon

This elegant black ivory maul is made from the bones of a displacer beast, the head of this mighty weapon is topped with the skull of the beast. Additionally the part of the handle is wrapped tightly in the flesh of the beast with a displacer beasts tentacle hanging from the end of the handle like a ribbon. The maul can create an illusion that gives the appearance that it is in a slightly different location than it truly is, confusing your foe in midst of combat.

The maul has 1d4 charges and regains 1d4 expended charges daily at dawn.

When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can use your reaction to expend one charge to distract the creature creating an opening. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check. On a failed save, the next attack roll against the target has advantage if the attack is made before the start of your next turn.

Mordekainen’s Bar Stool

Wondrous item, rare

An ordinary-looking wooden bar stool that appears to have seen quite a bit of wear. When a creature sits on the stool and holds out its hand, a tankard filled with whatever non-magical liquid they imagine appears. The liquid is drinkable, and any alcoholic or poisonous drink produced in the tankard will have exactly the same effect as if it were gotten from another source.

The tankard (and the liquid within) is only usable by the person currently sitting on the stool. If it is handed to another person, poured out from the tankard (without being drunk by the stool’s occupant), or the occupant stands up from the stool, the tankard and the liquid disappear. Any liquid already drunk remains, however. If the seated occupant becomes drunk, the stool ceases to function for 24 hours.

-Inter-Party Conflict-

Ring of Weave Disruption

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

This silver ring contains a sapphire with an unknown rune etched into it. This ring constantly creates a disruption within the weave of magic in an area around it.

When a spell is cast that targets the ring’s wearer the caster must roll a d20. On a 1 the spell suffers the same effects as if the wearer had cast counterspell. While attuned to the ring, the wearer can’t cast spells. Once this effect successfully counters a spell, it can't be used again until the next dawn.

The Wood Reaper

Weapon (any sword), common

This blade has a double-edged blade, widest at about two-thirds of its length from the end, and ending in a very long point. Upon closer inspection, the blade has intricate designs that give the blade the appearance of a large leaf. Along both sides of the blade are elvish ruins that are so ancient, most elves can’t decipher it. Its hilt is an image of entangled vines crawling to the guard and blade. This short sword can cut through any wood as easily as it would cut through the flesh of an enemy.

Tiamat’s Chromatic Amulet

This obsidian amulet is laced with a frame that appears as an ever-changing mix of chromatic colors. In the center, the five-headed queen of dragons’ image appears with a stoic visage. This item can be used as an arcane focus. This item has 1d4 charges and regains expended charges daily at dawn.

When using this item as an arcane focus, you can use a charge to change the elemental damage type of the firebolt or ray of frost cantrips to cold, acid, lightning, fire, or poison (your choice) for 1 minute.

Tiny Dancer

Wondrous Item, Rare

A mechanized toy standing 6 inches tall. When wounded the Tiny Dancer moves with unearthly grace in an enchanting performance. All creatures watching must make a DC 15 Wisdom save or become charmed for up to 1-minute during the performance, and will have disadvantage on all Wisdom saving throws, and is unable to speak for the duration. A creature can make another saving throw at the end of each of its turns. This item has no effect on creatures and characters that cannot be charmed.

-D&D Character Lab-

Tome of the Blade Dancer

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

This blue leather-bound book has intricate silver filigree around its edges with an embossed image of an elegant thin blade with a sapphire gem in its pommel. This book can be used as a spellbook. As an action, you can draw a magical blade from the book. The shortsword matches the image embossed on the front.
