D&D Beyond Will be Delisting Two D&D Books This Week

D&D Beyond Will be Delisting Two D&D Books This Week | crit academy

So, yeah, this is kinda weird to me. Apparently, D&D Beyond has announced that subscribers won’t be able to buy two previously released books. Both books Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes will no longer be available for purchase for new subscribers when the newest release Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse becomes available from Wizards of the Coast. The new rulebook will contain newly updated formats that Wizards is moving to. Much of the book contains content from both these books with alterations and updates. Those that purchased these two books will still have access to their content. They just won't be available for new purchases.

The new 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons supplement includes new rules for not only monsters but also for the player character races. The supplement Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything instituted some new designs. Many believe that this is going to become the standard across all of the 5e content moving forward. In addition to those adjustments, some of the features and powers are being rebalanced to be more in line with the newer format. The two books will be delisted on May 17th, one day after the new book goes live today May 16th. Once again, access across the board will still be available to those who purchased them.

As a fan of the Forgotten Realms setting, I’m particularly concerned about the loss of the story and lore that ties monsters, races, and locations to the setting. The new Monsters of the Multiverse pulls away from this location-based lore entirely to allow the creatures to better fit into any universe. This also means we are losing the entire lore of large impactful events such as the Blood War and the battles that raged between the different races. As a Dungeon Master, I rely heavily on this for inspiration for my own games.

Currently to my understanding, there hasn’t been any confirmation as to whether the lore will be available elsewhere outside of the hardcover books. Whatever the case, this will impact a few people more than others. I understand the need to make the creatures and locations of Dungeons & Dragons more agnostic since so many DMs make their own worlds. But, some of us old farts who grew up with the lore of Dungeons & Dragons will miss some of these changes. Even though the changes moving forward are backward compatible, I do think that appealing to a broader audience will continue to help this hobby grow. Leaving a memorable impact on the new generation.

…damn I’m gettin old…
